The municipality of Letino, at an altitude of one thousand on the Matese massif, is an uncontaminated oasis of peace. A medieval village overlooking the valley of the river Lete, where you can admire the lake of Letino, and the valley of the river Sala, where you can appreciate the lake of Gallo Matese. The immense expanses of land see alternating secular woods and farms, used as cultivated fields and large areas for grazing. Letino is the highest mountainous municipality in the province of Caserta, on the border with Molise, which has recently been awarded the Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club. A recognition that represents a mark of tourist and environmental quality, by virtue of the offer of excellence and quality reception of the territory.
However, Letino is not only nature and tourism but also history. And it can be noticed already from the conformation of the historical inhabited area, proper of a fortified fief: it develops vertically with houses and buildings in local stone, connected by small streets and steep stairways. Point of reference and meeting point is undoubtedly the panoramic Piazza della Repubblica, where there is the Town Hall but above all the ancient Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista, patron and protector of the village. In order to rediscover the millenary traditions of Letinese, the participants of the Festival were able to take advantage of workshops focused on typical daily activities that are handed down from generation to generation, a precious bulwark of identity and community that still resists the ravages of modernity.
Among which:
- Italian Wine Tasting: tasting workshops to savor the richness of Italian wine culture, which has always been an undisputed emblem of quality
- Local Cuisine: a concrete Letio Magistralis on how to cook homemade pasta surrounded by the beauty of Letino's mountains
- Letino's traditional dress: every woman in the village owns one and leaves it to her daughter. During the meeting two volunteer visitors are dressed to explain the origin of the fabric and all its ornaments that make it a unique and rare piece. The richness of the details makes it one of the most complex and full of symbolism in all of Southern Italy.
The latter is the most ancient custom, whose origins are linked to the domination of the Hellenic populations that arrived here. In the past, it was worn daily and accurately revealed the socio-economic status of each woman. It is characterized by bright colors, embroidery, lace and specific accessories, such as the headdress called "mappelana", the hair pin (originally from Lower Ukraine) and the breastplate.
For this reason, the female costume, along with the rodda and parentezza, is part of the centuries-old traditions that have been included, in 2019, in the Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania, a catalog established by the Campania Region to preserve and enhance the most historical local traditions.
"I work with performance art and for me it is very important to feel the space and the place where I am, to know it and to be present during the work. It's not just about the physical presence, the architecture, the walls or the landscapes. The context, history and real people inspire me and become part of the process.
The proposal to work in a gallery space in Letino was very important. There was no empty room - there was an exhibition with sculptures and paintings by two artists, Aristides Patsoglou and Inge Schmidt. Looking at the portraits of the people of Letino, touching the walls, taking the hands of the real people in the gallery, all this created a connection between the exhibition and real life. 'It was one more opportunity to contemplate presence, in the place where we are.
I decided to combine this presence with the main local architectural material, stone. The walls tell us many stories with their silence. During the performance, I collected and put the stones together. I also used a large stone that started making sounds reminiscent of a heartbeat. This rhythm appeared through the interaction between the body and an object. The unity represented in the form of a large stone was in contrast to the pile of stones located in another part of the space. The process of walking through this pile created a line of road surrounded by the sound of movement, the interaction between feet and stones. This action was about a hole and a detail, the visible separation of people around and our invisible unity due to action and contemplation.
I really thank the people who were present, who created this special atmosphere.
Thank you for following the line of contact between the object, the body, the sculptures, the colors, the space and the people."
